Disease Ecology. We seek faculty candidates who use integrative approaches to study mechanisms that influence disease transmission and/or dynamics. Ecology. We invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of ecology. The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto (www.eeb.utoronto.ca) invites applications for a tenure track position in Ecology. The position is at the Assistant Professor level with an expected start date of July 1, 2010.

We seek applications from individuals working in diverse areas of ecology, broadly defined, including, but not limited to vertebrate ecology, field ecology, and quantitative ecology. The successful applicant will have a PhD, with an outstanding academic record and is expected to build an active, externally funded and internationally recognized research program. The appointee will demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and contributions to the education and training of undergraduate and graduate students. Postdoc (UBC-Okanagan)

Microbial Ecology

 

I am seeking a Postdoctoral researcher with research interests in soil microbial ecology.  The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing studies on the structure and functioning of microbial communities in natural and managed ecosystems. Projects include (a) the influence of soil microbes on grapevine nutrition, secondary metabolism, and wine quality, (b) the use of microbes as inoculants in the field, and whether or not they are invasive in natural and managed systems, (c) the role of soil microbes in landscape restoration, (d) the composition and functioning of microbial communities in disturbed and undisturbed ecosystems, among other projects. The ideal candidate has experience in microbiology and/or ecology, as well as a working knowledge of molecular methods. This is a new research lab at the University of British Columbia – Okanagan, a campus of UBC located in Kelowna, BC, Canada.

The position is open Fall 2009 for one year, renewable for a second year.  Salary will commensurate with experience.

TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION IN AQUATIC LANDSCAPE / AQUATIC ECOSYSTEM ECOLOGY

The Université du Québec à Montrèal (UQÀM), according to its Policy of Institutional Recruitment, seeks to recruit the most qualified level of human resources to ensure the effective development in all its domains of activity, and to ensure the renewal of its professorial corps.

We seek to fill an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position in the area of Aquatic Landscape / Aquatic Ecosystem Ecology, to be appointed in the Département des sciences biologiques of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM). The position is associated with the newly-created NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Carbon Biogeochemistry in Boreal Aquatic Systems. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program that will complement and expand the Chair's research scope, and broaden the existing expertise and interactions within the Department.

Job qualifications:
We preferentially seek to strengthen the Department's expertise in landscape-level analyses of freshwater ecosystems, including large-scale modelling of aquatic processes, the integration of aquatic and terrestrial biogeochemical processes, and land-use and climate change impact on aquatic ecosystem function and biogeochemical cycles. Expertise in ecosystem-level aquatic ecology will also be considered, including the physical/biological coupling in freshwater systems, and molecular microbial and plankton ecology. We seek a highly motivated and dynamic junior researcher and teacher, with a Ph.D. in biology, ecology or in other connected disciplines and with postdoctoral experience in areas described above. The person will join one of the top aquatic research groups in Canada (GRIL-UQAM, http://www.uqam.ca/griluqam) within a diverse department that also includes research groups in forestry, conservation and behavioural ecology. The successful applicant is expected to interact closely with the members of the aquatic research group and with other research groups at UQÀM, especially with forest and conservation ecologists, and terrestrial biogeochemists. The faculty member will be expected to participate in graduate training by serving on Master's and Doctoral advisory committees, maintain a vigorous extramurally-funded research program, serve on departmental and university committees, and advise students in academic and research areas.

The new faculty member is expected to teach undergraduate courses in the highly innovative problembased learning program in Biology, with the opportunity to give graduate-level courses in the areas of aquatic ecology, ecosystem and landscape ecology and/or modeling/statistics. Courses are taught in French, but the incumbent will be allowed a limited training period if not fluent in French; competence in oral and written French is a requisite for tenure.

Starting date will be May 2010, and conditions of employment follow the current collective agreement for professors at UQÀM.

MSc studentship (Regina)

M.Sc. position: urban and agricultural birds as sentinels of environmental health. We are looking for a motivated and dynamic graduate student to spearhead new research that combines bird behaviour and microbiology. The objective of the research is to examine factors affecting the incidence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and human pathogens carried by pigeons and gulls in a variety of habitats and circumstances. The research will involve field capture of birds and radio-telemetry, as well as extensive microbiology lab work. Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in biology or related science, and a keen interest in animal behaviour, the environment, and factors that affect human and wildlife health. Experience in field and laboratory research is a strong asset, but not a requirement. The successful candidate will be joining a collaborative team lead by two Canada Research Chairs, and would ideally be available to begin in January or May of 2010.

Postdoctoral Position in Spatial Modeling of Vegetation Dynamics

Applications are invited for a 1-year PDF position (with possibility of renewal) in spatial modeling of vegetation dynamics. The candidate should have experience in computer programming (any platform) of spatial simulation models and an interest in vegetation ecology. The candidate will work with research group of Dr. Madhur Anand, Canada Research Chair in Global Ecological Change, and with one of several vegetation ecosystems under study by the group through collaborations (e.g., in Canada, Brazil, China). Possible research questions include but are not limited to: What maintains biodiversity? What is the effect of species invasions? What are the implications of climate change? What is the role of spatial structure? What is the best way to restore an ecosystem? Applications will be considered immediately and until the position is filled. PhD position (Tulane)

PhD student opportunity at Tulane University to work on the population dynamics of a migratory songbird

Seeking a PhD student to work on a collaborative project studying the winter ecology, survival and migratory connectivity of Tree Swallows. The project is flexible and will be designed by the student but will involve fieldwork in the southern US and Mexico and may involve population modeling. The candidate should have strong quantitative and writing skills and be able to work for extended periods of time in the field. Support is available from a combination of research and teaching assistantships and the student will also be expected to apply for external scholarships. Previous experience with mist-netting and bird banding is strongly preferred. Fluency in Spanish would also be advantageous
